Sugarloaf Ski Resort - Starry Sky and Nature at its best
If you are a looking for a secluded place to relax and unwind, then you should try Sugarloaf Resort in Maine. Carrabassett Valley Maine where Sugarloaf Ski Resort is located is one of the most secluded places in continental US - far away from any big city, quiet and surrounded by endless forest. There is no city big or small for at least 60 miles, and to get to a big city you need drive 4 hours (both Boston, MA and Montreal, QC are about 4 hours drive from Sugarloaf).
Even if the location is remote, Sugarloaf Mountain Resort in Maine is one of the top year-round destinations in New England. Sugarloaf is the largest ski area east of the Rockies, with trails and glades spread across Sugarloaf Mountain, Brackett Basin and Burnt Mountain.
The resort offers many winter activities including skiing, snowboarding, tubing, snowshoeing, and terrain parks. Summer activities include golf, hiking, mountain biking, moose view tours plus facilities to host conferences and weddings.
What I find really amazing about the Carrabassett Valley is how beautiful the sky is at night... On the Bortle's scale, the sky's brightness in Carrabassett Valley is class 2 - which means typical truly dark site - making all the stars and constellations visible.
The ski resort has something from every one - from green and blue trails for beginners to nice blacks and difficult terrain. There is also cat-skiing available on the Burnt Mountain.
1. Where to stay in the Carrabassett Valley?
While the number of hotels is small, you can always find good places to stay.
The Ski Octopus is usually staying at the Spillover Motel & Inn in Stratton, ME. You can also check the Sugarloaf Resort website - as sometimes they have good deals for condos close to the slopes.
2. Where to eat in the Carrabassett Valley?
The Ski Octopus has 2 preferred places in the area. Trail's End Steakhouse & Tavern in the village of Eustis is probably the only steakhouse in the world that can be reached by snowmobile. :) If you prefer Italian, Tufulio's Restaurant & Bar is another great place to try. Also, you should try Widowmaker (the bar at the bottom of the ski hill) - as they usually have live music in the evening.
Try it out next ski season and let me know what you think about it. Also... give it a try in summer if you want.
